Anthony Messineo's work combines a blend of passion for reviving the past with Mother Nature and metal. His creative journey begins with the search for castaway metal in the desert surrounding Palm Springs, California. Fortunately for Messineo, the desert's climate preserves the metal, where in other areas it would disintegrate much sooner. As a result many of his materials are from the early 1900's. He is a purist at heart, refusing to find materials at Dumps or Scrap yards. Instead he chooses to wander the desert to help restore the environment and rescue old sheet steel, signs, car parts, or any metal object that has been colored and texturized by the elements of time.
Born in 1956, Messineo was raised in Long Island, New York. His fascination with old metal began as a child, discovering coins and other objects washed up along the river near his home. Messineo began creating as a child and studied Commercial Art in New York. He moved to Palm Springs in 1983. Through his love of nature and hiking, he discovered the many deserted roads and abandoned homesteads filled with precious metals.
Messineo has been devoted to his unique medium for the past 15 years. His abstract images reflect nature as expansive, colorful and mysterious. The work is a kingdom of color, shape and texture found in what is disguised as ordinary objects and surfaces that become a gift to every soul and spirit that is hungry to see through the sensible side of the world into a deeper, more meaningful existence.
